Are You Developing For Mobiles?

400 models of mobile phones have been shipped around 800 million times that support Flash Lite and that number is only going to increase. The mobile web is a market with growing screen size, touch screen interaction and a slow shift to true web browsers which is only moving in an upward trend.

It’s Not Just Flash

Even if you do not want to develop with Flash there is Google Android, which is growing in popularity as well. In fact, they recently announced that the platform, among many others, will be supporting Flash {the full Flash version}, though probably not till 2010.

Of course, there are multiple other platforms that one can use to develop for mobiles. But the above two examples are the ones that a lot of web developers can easily relate with.

I imagine with time people will use their phones to start building widgets for anything under the sun, as you can do today with content on the web, and share them with their whole contact list. (more…)

Dead Dropping Flash

If you haven’t been keeping up with the Flash drops that Lee Brimelow has been making all over the world, well OK the U.S and Europe mostly, then you really should read his blog.

From hiding cryptic messages in BMP and WAV files to decoding ciphers the techniques used by him are quite fun for some and a challenge to others. Here in is the interesting part, I was amazed to learn that you can use ActionScript to retrieve hidden text in an image file!

I had NO idea that could be done. True there are other programs that can help you do that as well, but still that’s amazing.

So far Lee has had four drops, I’m not sure if he is going to have anymore in Europe. But if you are interested in getting your hands on a Master collection of Adobe CS4 {provided you’re in the area} then make sure you keep up with his blog, he might just have another one.

The Art of the Chart

The days of boring Excel bar graphs are over. Flash is slowly, but surely, planting itself as the de facto medium to view statistical data. People love numbers and they love seeing those numbers looking all pretty even more. Flash has enabled data gatherers to give their statistics a good dose of ooh’s and aah’s.

Google, Yahoo and MSN {apparently they’re waiting for the Silverlight edition} are using Flash based charts to display stock market prices, Google even uses it in their Web Analytics service. There is also an open source alternative to display your content in a Flash chart, not too mention a host of paid ones. Some are even available on FlashDen.

Creative uses of showing data have been popping up on a regular basis over the past year or so, like this one on the NYTimes showing box office receipts for the past couple of decades. (more…)

7 Design Trends For Flash Sites

People who use Flash for their web work are expected to be a developer and designer rolled into one. I would imagine 99% of our authors here do their own design and write their own ActionScript, as opposed to other web design work which can be done as is. For instance, you can’t just make a “skin” in Flash and sell it without functionality as you could a PSD file. It just won’t work.

If you’re hard pressed for ideas on what to use for a design feature here are 7 design trends that you can employ in your Flash templates, or any file for that matter, to add that touch of flair.

7 Design Trends For Flash Sites

1. Centered Simplicty – I’ve rarely gone “fullscreen” while visiting a website as I personally don’t like that functionality, except when it comes to video. Centering your content is a much more effective way of grabbing the attention of your visitor to garner a longer stay on the website.

Reviewer Notes: What we look for in Code Commenting and Help Documentation

Short term loss, long term gain.

That’s my greatest advice to you if you are planning on writing any kind of documentation.  It may be boring, and it may be time consuming, but the small investment of time it takes to write good documentation far outweighs the potential time it would take to continually answer and write to all your users with the same answers over, and over, and over again.

If you have been authoring files on Flashden for a while now, you will already know that there are two mandatory requirements for documenting your uploads.

If you are a new author, here’s a quick summary:

  • You must always comment your ActionScript
  • You must always provide a well-written help file

If your ActionScript code is not properly commented, your file will be rejected.  Similarly, if your help documentation is not adequate, your file will also get rejected.  So what do reviewers look for in your documentation when they review your file? (more…)

Design a Simple Landing Page with Flash

Flash can be used to make a lot of stuff. From video players, audio players, full blown websites to games, applications and widgets among many more usages. If you’ve been around a while you might know that quite a bit of the webs content is made up of landing pages.

Using a mixture of Flash, HTML and CSS you can come up with some very creative money making content yourself.

What’s A Landing Page?

Landing pages have been around since the birth of the Internet. People have used them for collecting your name and email address to selling you something. The affiliate marketing industry are probably the most prolific users of landing pages.

Designing A Landing Page with Flash

The first thing you need to determine before you set about designing a landing page is to figure out what it is exactly you want your visitor to do? In this example, I want my visitor to visit Themeforest via my referral link. So let’s get started. (more…)

Envato Earnings Apps, File Piracy, and Keeping Your Account Safe and Secure!

There’s been a lot happening on the marketplaces of late, and today I wanted to touch on a few important issues and get some feedback, from you, the community.

Firstly, for those of you who don’t know me, My name is Cyan and I’m the Envato marketplace manager. That means I’m the person who’s in charge of the day to day running of the marketplaces as a whole with the help of the awesome site managers, reviewers and moderators.

Lately we’ve noticed some brilliant new author apps popping up, and some talk on the forums of files being distributed without author permissions. I want to talk a little about both of these issues. Additionally, I want to tell you about some things you should be doing to promote maximum account security.
